Why Does My Car Smell Like Gas After I Park? Is it Dangerous?

A gasoline smell after parking gets your attention fast. The engine is off, the car is sitting still, and yet the odor seems stronger than it did while you were driving. Sometimes it is faint and disappears in a few minutes. Other times, you can smell fuel as soon as you step out of the car. Where the odor is strongest gives us a useful starting point. Fuel smell near the rear of the vehicle points to different areas than an odor coming from under the hood. We also want to know whether it happens after every drive, only after filling the tank, or mainly when the vehicle is parked in a garage. A Loose Fuel Cap Is the Easy Place to Start The fuel cap seals the filler neck and helps the EVAP system keep gasoline vapors contained. A cap that was left loose after refueling can let vapors escape, especially with a full tank. A cracked seal, damaged cap, or problem around the filler neck can do the same thing.
