At our shop, we check the simple things first, but we do not stop there if the smell keeps returning. A loose cap can trigger a check engine light, but tightening it will not repair a damaged vapor hose or leaking filler neck. Fuel Can Leak Without Leaving a Big Puddle

Leaking injectors, ignition problems, oxygen sensor faults, airflow sensor problems, or excessive fuel pressure can all push the mixture too rich.
The clues tend to come together. You might see dark exhaust, notice poor fuel economy, feel a rough idle, or find the check engine light on the dashboard. Scan data and fuel trim readings help us see whether the computer is trying to correct a mixture problem rather than dealing with a physical fuel leak.
